Watkins Glen International
Watkins Glen, NY
The Watkins Glen area has a long history of racing. In 1948, a student at nearby Cornell proposed an amateur road race, and a 6.6 mile track was laid out. In October of that year, the first race was held in Watkins Glen, NY.
After using the streets of the town for a few years, the race was moved to a new location and a permanent circuit was built for racing. This layout was 2.3 miles and the course was used up until 1970. The first major overhaul was started in 1971, and added an all new pit road and straightaway on the track. Another change was added in 1971, the section most commonly known as “the boot” when Formula One came to the track in 1971. This boot section is primarily used by sports car racing series.
NASCAR in Watkins Glen started in 1986. For this course, NASCAR utilizes the 2.45 “short course”, with a chicane on the backstretch. While NASCAR primarily races on ovals, this is one of the seven road courses on the schedule.
