Sonoma Raceway
Sonoma, CA
Opening in 1968, Sonoma Raceway kicked off its racing history with a sports car race in December. The NASCAR Cup Series had its debut at the road course in 1989 and the track has been on the schedule ever since, except in 2020.
For a majority of the NASCAR races at Sonoma, the 1.99-mile “chute” layout has been used, which offers better vantage points for fans. In 2019, NASCAR returned to the “full course” layout, utilized through 2021 before returning to the “chute” layout. NASCAR has had a long history at the raceway, with Ricky Rudd winning the first race in 1989. The track was famous for the “road course ringers”, with drivers from other road racing series jumping in NASCAR cars to try to get a win.
The Xfinity Series debuted at Sonoma in 2023 and will return in July 2025 with the Cup Series.
