Richmond Raceway
Richmond, VA
Built in 1946 as a half-mile dirt track, Richmond Raceway has served as the home for racing in the central Virginia area. Hosting what was known as the “Strawberry Hill Races”, which features both horses and car races, the track has a rich history of racing. In 1953, the track was officially added to the NASCAR Cup series schedule, with Lee Petty taking the first win at the track.
In 1968, the dirt surface was removed and paved over, and again in 1988, the track was reconfigured to the current 3/4-mile oval layout. Richmond is unique as it is the only track with a 3/4-mile layout, and NASCAR made two trips to the track from 1958 to 2024. In 2018, Richmond underwent its biggest changes with a multimillion-dollar infield redevelopment project. The project added an all-new fan experience in the garage area, along with a fan zone in the infield and a new victory lane. The new garage allows fans to get up close with their favorite drivers and watch teams work on the cars. The new victory lane puts fans right next to the winning driver to join in the celebrations.
The Cup Series and the Craftsman Truck Series visit Richmond in August 2025.
