Phoenix Raceway
Avondale, AZLocated in the suburb of Avondale, Phoenix Raceway was built in 1964. Due to the terrain, infield road course, and drag strip, the backstretch features a dogleg design. The track opened in 1964, serving as the home for open wheel racing in the southwest. NASCAR made their first journey to the desert in 1978, but the Cup Series did not take their first trip to Phoenix until 1988. With the Cup series coming to town, Phoenix added more seats and a suite building outside of turn 1. The first Cup race held was won by Alan Kulwicki.
Phoenix Raceway has undergone a few changes throughout the years. In 2003, turn 2 had the outside wall pushed further back to made the racing safe, and in 2005 the track added lights after NASCAR awarded the track a second race date. The biggest change to the track happened just a few years ago in 2017. In 2017, ISC announced a $178 million renovation project, and would feature seating upgrades, suite renovations, new fan areas in the infield, and a new fan midway outside of the track. In addition to these fan amenities, the track surface also underwent a major change. The start/finish line was moved, pit road was reconfigured, and more pit stalls were added.
In 2019, NASCAR announced that Phoenix Raceway would host the NASCAR championship weekend. Phoenix had their first championship race in 2020, crowning fan favorite Chase Elliott as the NASCAR champion.
