Built in 1909, the world famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway has been hosting auto racing for well over 100 years. Most notably hosting the Indianapolis 500 and the former host of the United States Grand Prix, Indianapolis has a rich history of racing. NASCAR made their first trip to the speedway in 1994, and Indiana native Jeff Gordon took the inaugural NASCAR win.
NASCAR has had a significant impact on the racing history at Indianapolis, and for the 2018 and 2019 seasons was the last race before the NASCAR playoffs. Since 2021, the NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Xfinity series will visit the 2.5 mile track, utilizing the infield road course.
